General Orientation

This year (2008/09 academic year) we are changing the TLT Workshop format a bit. Rather than 5 days back-to-back, we'll be conducting it on one Saturday (all day) plus three additional half-days, in succeeding Friday afternoons. We do not charge for the event, but do require that attendees be nominated to attend by their respective deans, departmental chairs, or the like.

The process of selecting attendees will also change. Whereas in the past five years we've required all attendees to be teaching faculty (fairly loosely defined), we're hoping this year to seek a mix of faculty and grad students who may benefit especially from our curriculum. With roughly half faculty and the other half grad students, we'll be encouraging some pairing up on work projects to be developed within the workshop, though will not require such pairing.

Each attendee (or pair) will be required, as in past years, to plan and develop a project of some kind, and on the final day of the workshop will present to the group on his or her progress with such project. With less "seat time" in the workshop compared with past years, our group in Research and Academic Technologies will be providing consultations, coaching, and, as necessary, software and working space facilities for each attendee.

The focus of the workshop is the use of technology in the context of pedagogical purposes, and we orient the curriculum strongly around best practices in pedagogy, not technology per se. We've set tentative dates for the next one, January 24, February 6, 13, and , 20, and are in process of reconfiguring elements that were designed initially for the full-five-days event. Technology topics have not been finalized, but will be ones that relate to students' learning environments, typically a part of or embedded in the CMS (Blackboard).
