What is Depot?
Depot is a web-based tool that allows Northwestern faculty and their students to upload files such as syllabi, homework assignments, notes, papers, theses, dissertations, and graphics. After uploading a file, Depot can be used to store, share, or conveniently access that file. The flexibility of Depot allows a user to control file sharing: a file can be private, shared with one user (whether or not they have a Depot account), a group of users, or published to the web. Shared files can be read-only, or writable for collaborative work. Depot has been provided as a joint effort between the NU Library and NU Information Technology.
Depot Features
File Storage: Depot allows users to save files on a server that can be easily accessed from anywhere online, on or off campus.
File Sharing: The versatility of sharing in Depot is one of its most convenient features—you can choose sharing options for each and every file you store on Depot. With sharing options, you can choose who you want to share your files with: the World Wide Web, the whole Depot community, one or more individuals, or you can keep your file unshared. But not only can you choose who you share your files with, but how you share those files. You can allow the file just to be read and downloaded, or you can grant other users permissions such as the ability to edit or delete that file, as well.
Web Publishing: Depot users can use Depot to publish a web page that can be universally accessed on the internet via www.depot.northwestern.edu/NetID/pagename.ext. Web page access is not restricted to the Depot users or the Northwestern community.
Drag and Drop File Management: The drag and drop feature on Depot enables for quick and easy file management. Typically, a user would have to view and manage Depot files in a web directory. But with the drag and drop feature, users can view both their own files and files shared with them by others in a Windows style interface. This allows users to move files simply by highlighting the file icon with the mouse, dragging them, and dropping them in the desired location or target folder. Users can drag files from their computer into a Depot folder or from Depot onto their computer.
System Management: Depot runs on a well-maintained and monitored system where files that users store on Depot are protected by secure server backups performed nightly.
